On Being Seen as a Parent
I’ve been photographing Day in the Life sessions for five years. I’ve known they are significant. Parents have told me that the pictures make them feel validated and proud. They are always surprised to see all of the beauty and love that is in their regular life. They see things that they haven’t noticed before.
Evelyn and I were photographed in July. I can feel all of this in my bones. Now I truly KNOW how important Day in the Life sessions are.
The transition into motherhood has been tough for me. I’ve always worked with kids. I have always LOVED it. So this was a big surprise. I can’t seem to keep up. I feel like a hot mess most of the time. I am definitely not doing this perfectly.
And now that my daughter is a toddler, I feel even more overwhelmed.
My husband ended up having to travel for work on the day of our session. Ultimately I decided that I was ok with this. I suspected that pictures of just me and Evelyn would show the love and humor of our daily challenge. It would be like getting a gold medal. And that’s just what it did. I am beyond grateful to Aleks for showing me that.
